This Community is for scholars engaged in mixed methods research who aim to integrate qualitative and quantitative approaches in theoretically and methodologically meaningful ways. It welcomes researchers across disciplines and career stages who design, conduct, and critically reflect on mixed methods studies.
Community focus and ethos
The Mixed Methods Community serves as a hub for scholars dedicated to advancing mixed methods research as an integrative methodological practice. It brings together researchers interested in transcending the qualitative–quantitative divide by combining multiple methodological perspectives to generate deeper, more nuanced, and more inclusive understandings of social phenomena than would be possible through a single method alone.
The Community plays a central role in shaping and coordinating the Community-led Mixed Methods track at the MethodsNET Conference. The track focuses on core challenges of mixed methods research, including integration across research stages, design reasoning, abductive logic, collaboration, and reflexivity. Particular attention is given to methodological innovation at the intersection of approaches, including the use of AI, visual, and creative methods, as well as to the human and collaborative dimensions of conducting mixed methods research.
Beyond the conference, the Community supports ongoing methodological exchange through thematic discussion groups, methods clinics, collaborative problem-solving sessions, and shared resources. These activities foster collective learning around mixed methods designs, practices, challenges and support researchers at different career stages.
Topics relevant for submissions
- Challenges and reflections: Methodological challenges and complexities in conducting mixed methods research, critical engagement with qualitative and quantitative components (e.g. thematic, phenomenological, and statistical approaches) within mixed methods designs.
- Integration: Integration in the analysis of mixed methods research, including design-driven and analysis-driven integration, as well as examination and comparison of integration practices across mixed methods research.
- Technological and creative innovations: Use of AI in mixed methods studies (e.g. data integration, automatic coding) and innovative approaches such as visual and arts-based mixed methods.
- Specific contexts: Applications of mixed methods research in feminist and intervention research, as well as in interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary collaborations.
- Human, collaborative, and reflexive dimensions of doing MMR: Building and managing effective mixed methods research teams; teamwork and collaboration in mixed methods projects; and reflexivity and researcher positionality in MMR.
- Design and reasoning: Blending inductive and deductive reasoning in mixed methods approaches, as well as the development and use of abductive protocols in mixed methods research.

Short bio
Emmanuel Remi Aiyede is Professor of Political Institutions, Governance, and Public Policy at the University of Ibadan and Extraordinary Professor at the University of Pretoria. He is a Fellow of the Pan-African Scientific Research Council and former Research and Policy Uptake Lead at the Partnership for African Social and Governance Research (PASGR), Nairobi.
He teaches postgraduate research methods in political science and is a faculty member of the PASGR Research Methods Institute, contributing to modules on designing social inquiry, mixed-methods research, and doctoral supervision. He also works with Yiaga Africa on tools to assess the integrity of local elections in Nigeria.
His publications include Public Policy and Research in Africa (Palgrave, 2023), a chapter in the Routledge Handbook of Public Policy in Africa (2021), and Political Evaluation (2012). He is Regional Editor (Africa) for The Round Table.

Short bio
İlknur Yüksel-Kaptanoğlu is an associate professor in the Department of Social Research Methodology at the Hacettepe University Institute of Population Studies. She holds an interdisciplinary background in statistics, gender and women’s studies, and demography, and has extensive experience in both quantitative and qualitative research. She has been involved in nationally representative studies, including the Turkey Demographic and Health Survey and national surveys on violence against women. Her main research interests include violence against women, qualitative and mixed-methods research, gender-sensitive data, family demography, and gender equality. She is a member of the World Health Organization’s Technical Advisory Group on VAW Data and Measurement and an active member of women’s organizations in Turkey.
