ON-02: Qualitative Data Analysis: Coding

Overview

This online course is designed for novice data analysts, early-career researchers, and anyone looking to build strong qualitative coding skills. You’ll learn how to develop codes, identify patterns, generate meaningful findings, and effectively illustrate and present your results. With hands-on practice in NVivo (or other QDA software), you’ll gain the confidence to manage, analyze, and communicate qualitative data from interviews, focus groups, documents, and media.

About the Course

This online course provides an introduction to qualitative data analysis, ideal for those new to qualitative data work or looking to strengthen their coding skills. It covers the process of selecting data, developing and applying codes (inductive, deductive, abductive, and interpretative), and generating insights, with a focus on building a solid foundation in qualitative data analysis.
Participants will gain hands-on experience using NVivo, though the course can also be followed with ATLAS.ti or MAXQDA. The course also covers structuring your analysis using higher-level abstractions like categories, themes, and pattern codes, as well as visualizing and presenting your findings clearly. Practical exercises with sample data will help you develop coding skills, even if you’ve never worked with QDA software before.
By the end of the course, you’ll feel confident in your ability to conduct qualitative coding and data analysis. On the final day, we’ll introduce advanced coding methods suited to different research questions, including thematic analysis (both reflexive and codebook-based), qualitative content analysis, and grounded theory.
If you’re eager for even more practice of these methods, you can continue developing your skills in our in-person all day course, “Qualitative Data Analysis: Methods Workshop,” where you’ll explore advanced QDA techniques through guided exercises and interactive sessions.

Anka Kekez

Anka Kekez is an assistant professor at the Faculty of Political Science at the University of Zagreb, Croatia, where she teaches public policy and public management. She also teaches qualitative data analysis and since 2022 is an instructor at the Methods Excellence Network Summer School in Social Research Methods. Her research interests include policy implementation and service delivery, public management reforms and policy design, collaborative governance, political meta-governance and clientelism. Her work is published in international journals such as Policy and Society and Policy Sciences. In 2019, she has edited (together with Michael Howlett and M Ramesh) the book “Collaboration in Service Delivery: Promise and Pitfalls”. She also has 18 years of experience in social development, including the design and implementation of applied policy research. In teaching, she uses service learning as a method of teaching and learning through experience in which participants acquire and use knowledge and skills by addressing the needs of their community.​​
