About the Course

Digital technologies have become essential for empirical research across many disciplines. This course focuses on the practical use of digital technology for qualitative data collection, catering to scholars who aim to integrate online qualitative methods into their research designs. Online research methods serve as adaptations of traditional qualitative data collection techniques, modified for digital environments – various platforms and applications. These tools facilitate access to diverse participants and enable unique opportunities for data collection. The course begins with an exploration of fundamental of online qualitative research methods, their defining characteristics, and their temporal structures. It examines the strengths and limitations of online research approaches compared to traditional face-to-face methods. Participants will explore various qualitative online data collection techniques, including online focus groups, dyadic and in-depth interviews, and virtual ethnography, addressing both methodological frameworks and practical implementation. Additionally, the course will cover strategies for integrating multiple online data collection methods and navigating ethical challenges such as anonymity online, consent, privacy, and researcher-participant interactions. By the end of the course, participants will be equipped with the skills to design and conduct rigorous online qualitative research, ensuring methodological integrity and ethical responsibility.

This course provides a comprehensive introduction to online qualitative research methods, offering both theoretical foundations and practical guidance on conducting qualitative studies in digital environments. It covers online focus groups, dyadic and in-depth interviews, and virtual ethnography (online fieldwork), with a strong emphasis on the unique opportunities and challenges associated with online qualitative data collection.

We will examine in detail:

  • The advantages and limitations of online research methods, particularly in comparison to traditional qualitative approaches
  • The temporal structures of online qualitative research, distinguishing between synchronous and asynchronous data collection methods
  • Key qualitative data collection techniques, including online focus groups, dyadic and in-depth interviews, and virtual ethnography
  • Sampling strategies tailored for online research, ensuring representative and diverse participant engagement
  • Practical approaches for implementing digital qualitative research, including platform selection, interaction management, and researcher-participant communication
  • Ethical, technological, and methodological challenges of online research, including issues related to anonymity, informed consent, data privacy, and digital interactions.

Course Structure

The first section introduces participants to the role of digital technologies in qualitative research. It provides an overview of key concepts, benefits, and challenges associated with online qualitative research.

The second section focuses on the temporal dimensions of online qualitative research. Participants will explore the differences between synchronous (real-time) and asynchronous (time-lagged) approaches, learn how to select appropriate digital platforms for different research objectives, and develop strategies for managing interactions and engagement in various temporal settings.

In the third section, participants will examine different online qualitative data collection methods. They will learn how to conduct and moderate online focus groups, plan and execute online in-depth interviews, and apply virtual ethnography techniques to observe and engage with online communities.

The fourth section covers sampling strategies and participant recruitment in online research specifically. Participants will learn how to identify and select participants in digital research environments, ensure diversity and representativeness in their studies, and navigate ethical considerations related to recruitment, consent, and participation.
The final topic section addresses ethical methodological considerations in online qualitative research. It explores privacy, confidentiality, and security concerns, discusses institutional review board (IRB) compliance and research integrity, and provides guidance on overcoming common methodological challenges encountered in digital qualitative research.

Course Activities

This course integrates theoretical knowledge with a variety of hands-on activities, including:

  • Analysis of case studies demonstrating the application of online qualitative methodologies
  • Simulated exercises in conducting online focus groups and interviews
  • Group discussions and peer feedback sessions on research design and methodology
  • Individual consultations with the instructor to refine research plans and address specific challenges

Who Should Attend?

This course is suitable for:

  • PhD students and early-career researchers who plan to conduct qualitative research using digital methods
  • Social science researchers seeking to integrate online data collection techniques into their projects
  • Academics and professionals looking to expand their methodological expertise in digital qualitative research

No prior experience with online qualitative research is required. However, familiarity with traditional qualitative methods will be beneficial. Participants should be prepared to actively engage with digital research tools and critically evaluate their methodological choices.
